Our History

1920s

The Desjardins Group, a three-generation family business, opens a single retail pharmacy, located in the Byward Market of Ottawa, Ontario.

1957

Pharmacist Erast Huculak, opens the doors of his first pharmacy in Oshawa, Ontario. His services include delivering prescriptions by bicycle to seniors that are unable to pick up their medicines at the store.

1974

Jean-Paul Desjardins acquires Ontario Medical Supply (OMS) and expands to a small, three-person operation providing pharmaceutical and healthcare products and services in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.

1987

Erast Huculak is joined by three pharmacists, Richard Sevazlian, Sydney Shrott and Stephen Pearson. The four owners build Medical Pharmacies Group Limited (MPGL) into the leading long term care pharmacy in Canada.

1989

MPGL introduces medication management policies, procedures, audits, and the model of clinical consulting pharmacists in long term care.

1993

OMS combines all of its operations including the head office, warehousing and distribution facilities to one location at 848 Belfast Road, Ottawa.

2004

MPLG develops MEDeAlert pharmacy software to ensure safe dosing of medications.
MPGL introduces the first integrated eMAR product in Canada with PointClickCare® into long term care

2007

OMS expands and centralizes all non-retail services to a 50,000 square foot new facility, attached to a 5,000 square foot medical products showroom at 1100 Algoma Road, Ottawa.

2007

MPGL develops and implements MEDeINR in collaboration with McMaster University researchers, promoting safer anticoagulant dosing of warfarin.

MPGL develops web-based auditing and reporting of metrics from the medication management system

2012

MPGL acquires three long term care pharmacies in British Columbia and acquires Desjardins pharmacy and Ontario Medical Supply.

2014

MPGL opens first pharmacy in Calgary, Alberta.

2015

BOOMR – Better Coordinated Medication Reconciliation program is piloted in Ontario, in collaboration with Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre and Sienna Senior Living.

MPGL launches the first electronic long term care medication incident reporting system called MedEReport.

2019

MPGL introduces a unique, integrated medical cannabis program to help improve the quality of life of residents.
