Luis Viana, R.Ph, B.Sc.Phm, M.Ed. CGP, a consultant pharmacist with Medical Pharmacies, is the recipient of the Novopharm Award of Excellence in Senior Care Pharmacy. This prestigious award was presented at the Senior Care Pharmacy Conference in Anaheim. 

Presented annually, the award acknowledges a senior care pharmacy practitioner who actively demonstrates and promotes the value of the Senior Care Pharmacists and/or facilitates the advancement of pharmaceutical care to the senior population. 

Luis graduated with his Pharmacy degree in 1987 from the University of Toronto, achieved his Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP) in 1999 and his Master of Education in 2005.   

Luis plays an active role as a senior care pharmacist, teacher, leader and mentor in many areas of pharmacy from the long term care setting and association level to the academic environment.

Luis’ commitment to continuing education is demonstrated through the following. Luis instructs at the preparation course, offered by the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association, helping pharmacists prepare for the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist exam. He also co-designed and continues to instruct at the “Medication in the Elderly” course, offered in conjunction with the Conestoga College to practicing nurses. In addition, Luis holds an Adjunct Professor position at the University of Waterloo (U of W) School of Pharmacy.  

Luis encourages all pharmacists across the country to take the opportunity to teach and mentor students in senior care pharmacy. “Together, we, the senior care pharmacists of today, can influence the senior care pharmacists of tomorrow”.
